This ancient method of making pictures is rapidly becoming a lost art because it takes so long to make a picture. Each piece of the picture is cut into the background with a knife or jeweler?s saw blade. It can take many hours to make even a simple picture, or hundreds of hours for a complicated one.
Today this art form is called marquetry. Wood veneer from every part of the world is used to ?paint? the picture. Shading is done by scorching the wood with hot sand.
Woodworking has been a serious hobby for Porter for many years, while professionally being a Medical Laboratory Director in New York and South Florida.
Articles on marquetry and woodwork and pictures of his work have been published in international woodworking magazines. He has been to Europe several times, studying marquetry in palaces and museums. He was a member of the South Florida Marquetry Group for many years, where he learned marquetry from some of the finest marquetarians who had retired to South Florida. He has lived in Lake City for 13 years and is a member of :
International Wood Collectors Society
British Marquetry Society
American Woodturners
Bell Woodturners
Art League of North Florida.
