Mary Law Goff
A solitary child growing up in Warren, Ohio, Mary expressed herself through poetry, which she embellished with colored designs. She carried out her fascination with color through a series of early works of nature...works a teacher described as "ethereal".
She traveled throughout the country taking advantage of private lessons and workshops to develop her own unique style. Her paintings are the result of geographical, professional, and spiritual journeys. Mary's ethereal style of art has been showcased in various one woman shows. She owned and operated an art gallery for twelve years where she worked with the local art guild organizing and judging many art competitions. With the sale of her gallery, she had time to focus on her own work.
Her art has been shown throughout the United States. Collectors have described her art as harmonious, compelling, and oftentimes, haunting. They are paintings of interior landscapes inspired by external environments.
Mary's studies in color and form create a sometimes abstract expression of her inner self. Through this expression she attempts to draw the viewers inside the painting where they ultimately become the creators.
The Artist Statement
I have been painting most of my life and involved with art in one form or another. I didn?t start marketing my work until my 55th birthday when I figured I only had another 55 years to become famous.
I have taken instruction in silk screen printing, stained glass, wood carving, oil, watercolor and acrylic painting as well as art appreciation and other crafts. I found other forms of art interesting but when I painted my first watercolor in I WAS HOOKED. From pure watercolor I have moved into mixed media for a wider expression of spirit.
My work is formed from my spirit and brought together by my experience with the media. When I see something really beautiful?I cry. I hope my work sometimes pulls from the viewer that deep feeling of awe. If the viewer cries, I?m happy.
